HINTS AND TIPS

Problems faced in the home.

  • Rcd trips.

RCD is short for Residual Current Device. This is another name for a safety switch. The RCD protects your life and the circuit breaker protects the cable.

Try and work out what appliance you turned on that made the RCD trip. If you can’t unplug everything and see if you can reset the RCD. If it doesn’t reset then call Paramount Electrical. If it does then plug in and turn on one appliance at a time until it trips again and the last item you plugged and turned on is faulty...

….

  • Powerboard heats up.

The power cable in your walls is 2.5mm this is protected by a 16 or 20 amp circuit breaker, the cable on most powerboards is only 0.75mm. This is a BIG safety hazard if you have too much load  plugged into a power board the cable heats up and can cause house fires. Try and work out how many watts the appliance uses eg :

800watts divided by 240 volts = 3.33amps

0.75mm cable can only handle around 6 Amps for extension leads

1.5mm cable can only handle around 12 Amps for extension leads

The only way to be sure that you are safe is if you buy a heavy duty power board with 2.5mm cable feeding it.

Then you know the power board has the same rating of the cables in the wall 16 – 20 amps.

  • Water too hot.

In most hot water systems there is a temperature gauge. If you find your water too hot you are wasting valuable electricity and spending too much money.

Paramount Electrical can help by coming around and reducing the temperature of the water to 60 degrees celcius. It is not recommended to go below 60 degrees because bacteria can form in the water.

  • Pool pump costs too much to run.

If your pool is on peak tarriff if is costing you usually around 40 to 60 cents per hour it operates. Multiply this by 6 hours a day and 365 days a year and you are looking at a figure of  up to $1,314. If you are not already on off peak for your pool you can halve this cost by changing your pool pump to tariff 33(off peak).

Requirements from energex are as follows –

The pool pump must be on its own circuit.

The pool pump must be hard wired. eg not a plug in.

If you can meet these requirements then you can save big dollars. Paramount Electrical will come around and if needed install a timer at your switchboard with a capacitor back up so the time keeps going when Energex turns your off Peak power off between usually 4-10pm each day. So this just means that you clean your pool during the other hours of the day 10pm – 4pm. If you have any other questions in regards to the send us an email.

  • Lights are too hot to stand under.

Heat that comes from lights is wasted electricity. If you have halogen downlights in your house and they are very hot to stand under they are costing you $$$. You can replace these lights with fluoro of led downlights and save heaps. Spot lights in your back yard are usually 150watts you can change these to 22w fluoro and save big $$$.

  • Have a light but need a fan in downstairs room.

If you have a 2 story house and cannot get access into the ceiling space downstairs there is an easy solution. They now have a wireless transmitter and receiver to make a light a fan/light combination. Paramount Electrical can come around and install your new fan with this device. You leave your old light switch on all the time which gives power to the fan/light receiver then you use the wireless remote to operate the light and the fan. The other advantage is this remote you can take with you to the sofa or the bed and change the speed of the fan or tun the light off later.

.

  • Light switch is in wrong location.

If you have a switch for a light and it’s in a silly location Paramount Electrical can help you with a few options. We can either move the switch, install 2 way switching, make the light a sensor light or as with the fan/light combination use a wireless switch.

  • My oven has no isolation switch.

The standards have changed so many times for cooktops and ovens. We at Paramount Electrical think that your safety is Paramount. We like to install a isolation switch on the oven and the cooktop even if it’s gas increasing the safety around the home. This way you can isolate both in a spill or fire. This also gives you the advantage of safety for children and saving money by not having a clock on your oven if you don’t need it.

  • My fan squeaks.

When fans are packaged in boxed they lay sideways letting the grease move to one side. When you first install a fan it is good practice to put it on high for up to 16 hours the let the grease heat up and spread around evenly. If your fan is old and squeaks you can try a balancing kit. Usually trying to fix a fan costs more than a new one so before it drives you up the wall give Paramount Electrical a call and we can give you many fans to choose from.

.

  • Fluoro lights flicker.

Sometimes you will get a little surge back through the neutral which causes your fluoro light to flicker. The little starter in the fluoro tries to light the gas.

The easiest method to fix this is replacing the fluoro globe with an energy saving halogen. If you require a more permanent solution or have fluoros you can’t replace let Paramount Electrical know and we can help.

.

  • Sensor light doesn’t work.

Sensor lights have varying ranges. The most expensive sensors usually have a range of up to 30m. If your sensor is in direct sunlight it will more than likely already be damaged. They lifespan of a sensor in direct sunlight is greatly reduced. When a licenced electrician installs a sensor they should always try and install it in a covered area.

If you want to test the sensor during the day there are a few adjustments on the unit. These are “Daytime-Nighttime, Length of time and some have a sensitivity adjustment.

.

  • Tv takes a long time to get the picture on some channels.

When you have made the change to digital you may find that some channels don’t work or take a long time to come up. The thing with digital is you either get the picture of you don’t there is no bad signal like analog. Paramount Electrical can help you with a few options. Firstly we can install a TV booster which plugs into your power circuit and sends a DC power boost up to the arial. Secondly if you are still having problems we can install a much larger arial which will gain a much better signal.

.

  • Phone line is crackly.

This is usually due to water in one of the connections. Paramount Electrical can come out and check all points up to your telstra connection. If this does not solve your problem then Telstra is your next option.

.

.

  • Phone has strange sound on it when I have my modem plugged in.

Firstly check to see if you have an adsl splitter on each phone and modem in the house. If you still have problems then give Paramount Electrical a call.

.

.

  • My wireless doesn’t reach my granny flat.

If your wireless doens’t go as far as you’d like it to there are 2 options. Paramount Electrical can come out and extend a data line from your current modem point to the granny flat so your internet point would be hard wired. The second option is to install a telephone line in the rear room of the house to which you could plug the modem into and hopefully transmit the signal to the granny flat.

.

.

  • My switch crackles when I turn the light on.

Switches only last so long. After many years the contact in them wears out and the crackling you hear is arcing. This is a potential fire hazard. Paramount Electrical can help you with replacement of the switch to solve this problem.

Other problems to look out for

  • Unprotected conduit.

When conduit is run up a wall in a grassed area it must by law have mechanical protection from mowers, whipper snippers etc.

  • Light circuits not RCD protected.

Do not assume because you house looks new it has an RCD on the lights. By law all new homes must have an RCD on the lights and power. In older homes even if they have been renovated they may not have an RCD on the light circuit.

If you do not have an RCD on the light circuit in your home you can increase your safety by turning off your circuit breaker when changing light globes. In the long term though it is highly recommended to have one installed by a licenced electrician.

  • Old fuses having incorrect fuse wire size.

If your house has fuses there is no guarantee that the fuse wire in the old fuses is even correct for the cable it should be protecting. In the short term you can install plug in circuit breakers that fit into the old fuse bases. Be very careful though because when you pull out the fuse there will be live terminals exposed. I recommend turning off your main switch and off peak main switch before pulling any fuses. If you can’t turn off the main switch make sure there is no load on the circuit so there will be no arcing from the fuse to the base. If you are unsure in any way about this please contact Paramount Electrical and we will be happy to help.

.

  • Smoke alarms only being battery powered.

All homes should have a mains powered smoke alarm between their kitchen and all bedrooms. If you have a two storey house you must have them on each level. If you kitchen is located in the centre of your house and you have bedrooms to the front and rear you must have them installed between the kitchen and the front bedroom and the kitchen and the rear bedroom.
